Dr Samuel Grimwood

Non-Executive Director

Samuel holds a PhD in Health Psychology and is an active member of the Male Psychology Division of the British Psychological Society. With more than 15 years of experience across both clinical and research roles, he brings extensive expertise in understanding and addressing psychological wellbeing.

Samuel is deeply committed to ensuring that the voices of working-class boys are heard. He is particularly passionate about supporting fatherless young men to manage psychological distress, develop healthy self-esteem, and grow into confident adults who feel valued, loved, and able to flourish. Believing strongly in the importance of consistent male role models, Samuel is proud to contribute to the mission of Lads Need Dads.

His clinical and research career has spanned autism, depression, anxiety, self-compassion, and respiratory conditions such as COPD, with a special focus on the complexities of health psychology and using creative and novel qualitative methodologies such as the use of photographs. His doctoral research explored the psychological and physiological factors of singlet oxygen in COPD, particularly the links between mood disorders, self-criticism, and the absence of self-compassion.

Alongside his ongoing clinical and academic work, Samuel writes and publishes on topics including clinical and health psychology, nature-based interventions, and horticulture. He also serves as a reviewer on a journal editorial board, is regularly invited to lecture at universities on depression, and contributes to the teaching and supervision of trainee psychiatrists within a medical school’s clinical and research department.
